How we calculate
You give a city, dates and kilometres. We price the same trip twice, as a rental car and as car sharing, and add everything you would actually pay on each side. When something can't be known, we say so instead of counting it as zero.
Rental car
- ✓ The usual price for that car class in your city and month
- ✓ Zero-excess insurance bought at the desk (the price most people end up paying)
- ✓ Fuel for your kilometres
- ✓ One-way and cross-border fees, if your trip has them
Shown next to it: the price with your own excess insurance bought online instead, and the deposit frozen on your credit card. The deposit isn't a cost, so it isn't added.
Car sharing
- ✓ The cheapest mix of the operator's minute, hour and day prices for your trip
- ✓ Kilometres beyond what the package includes
- ✓ Start, booking and one-off sign-up fees
- ✓ Cover that lowers your damage liability, when the operator sells it
- ✓ Fuel or charging, when it isn't included (private cars, some day rentals)
- ✓ Airport, one-way and cross-border fees
We never assume insurance or fuel is included. It's marked as included only for operators where it really is.
Where the numbers come from
- 51 car-sharing services: read from their own price pages every night.
- 21 services: checked by hand from their price lists and apps; each shows the date it was checked.
- 30 services publish prices only inside their app. We list them and say so, without a number.
- Rental prices: sampled listings for each city, adjusted for the month, plus desk insurance prices from the suppliers' own terms.
- Fuel: 7 l/100 km at the local petrol price (Lithuania: €0.135/km).
The rules we keep
- A saving is shown only if it holds up in the worst case.
- When rental is cheaper, we say it plainly.
- Every country page shows when it was last checked. Prices change; the app always has the final word.
Who checks it
Gabriel edits the site and is responsible for it, through MB „Expat Mates“ (company code 306289251). I live in Lithuania and drive these services; other countries are compiled from the operators' own terms and from travellers' tips. Found a wrong number? Write to me.
How the site is paid for
Tips on Ko-fi, nothing else. No ads, no affiliate links and nobody pays to be listed. If that ever changes, this page changes first, and the answer will still be calculated before any link is added.
